Popular ‘Nicotine Pouches’ Fail to Satisfy Smokers’ Cravings: Study
Study Finds 'Nicotine Pouches' are Not Effective for Helping Smokers Quit
Study finds popular ‘nicotine pouches’ ineffective for quitting smoking.
Oral nicotine pouches, touted as a cigarette alternative, have been found to be ineffective in curbing smokers’ nicotine cravings, according to a new study. These pouches, which contain nicotine powder and flavorings but no tobacco leaf, fail to provide the quick nicotine “spike” that eases cravings. It turns out the old-fashioned puff on a cigarette delivers a much greater nicotine punch, giving smokers sharper relief from their craving symptoms.
Lead researcher Brittney Keller-Hamilton, from Ohio State University’s Cancer Control Program, explained that the “spike” of nicotine from smoking occurs within about five minutes, while it takes oral pouches a discouraging 30 minutes to an hour to reach peak effectiveness. It’s understandable why smokers would find the instant gratification of cigarette smoking more appealing than these slow-acting pouches.
Adding to concerns, researchers worry that these pouches could attract young people, leading to increased nicotine addiction among a younger population without addressing the risk of cancer associated with smoking. However, Keller-Hamilton emphasizes the need to strike a balance when it comes to regulating nicotine pouches—making them less appealing to young people while still promoting their use as a safer alternative for adult smokers looking to switch from cigarettes.
These oral nicotine pouches have gained popularity since their introduction in 2016, primarily because they contain fewer carcinogens and toxins than traditional cigarettes, and can be used indoors where smoking is banned. However, this study aimed to investigate whether these assumptions hold true. To do so, researchers recruited 30 active adult smokers from Appalachian communities in Ohio and observed their nicotine levels and cravings while they smoked their regular cigarettes or used oral pouches containing different amounts of nicotine.

In their quest to understand the appeal, addictiveness, and usage patterns of oral nicotine pouches, Ohio State researchers have secured a $20 million grant from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Through this grant, they hope to gain insights into factors that influence people’s preferences for different nicotine products and their willingness to switch between them. Ultimately, the goal is to use this information to improve regulations on oral nicotine pouches and promote public health.
The researchers urge smokers who are trying to make a healthier choice or quit smoking altogether to consult their healthcare providers or reach out to their state’s quit line for guidance on the most suitable smoking cessation options for them.
