The Scoop on Soft Serve Ice Cream Recall due to Listeria Outbreak
FRIDAY, August 11, 2023 – In recent news, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall on a brand of soft-serve ice cream called “Soft Serve On The Go.” Two patients have been hospitalized in Pennsylvania and New York after consuming this ice cream, which has been potentially linked to Listeria monocytogenes infections. Real Kosher Ice Cream of Brooklyn, NY, the producer of these ice cream cups, has temporarily halted production and is fully cooperating with the investigation.
The affected flavors include vanilla chocolate, razzle, caramel, parve vanilla chocolate, strawberry mango, and peanut butter. More products may be added to the recall list, so it’s essential to stay updated on developments. The ice cream was distributed in multiple states, including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Washington, D.C., Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia.
Listeria infections, also known as listeriosis, can manifest within a few hours to several days after consuming contaminated food. Mild symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. However, in severe cases, individuals may experience headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Therefore, it is crucial for people, retailers, and restaurants to avoid eating, selling, or serving any of the recalled products. If you have purchased any of these ice cream cups, safely dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
While Listeria can affect anyone, some groups are at a higher risk, including pregnant individuals, newborns, adults aged 65 or older, and people with weakened immune systems. Pregnant individuals, in particular, should be cautious as listeriosis can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, or a life-threatening infection in newborns. Symptoms for pregnant individuals often include fever, fatigue, and muscle aches. If you suspect you may be experiencing symptoms of listeriosis, seek immediate medical attention from your healthcare provider.
To prevent further cases of Listeria infection, it’s essential to spread awareness about the recall. The FDA has advised people to share this information with friends, family, and loved ones who may have purchased the affected ice cream. Remember, it’s better to be safe than sorry!
