Grapes are not just delicious fruits; they contain powerful antioxidants that combat oxidative stress, a major contributor to poor eye health. By reducing oxidative stress, grapes help improve certain biomarkers linked to macular degeneration, a common eye condition affecting people over 50.

The study involved 34 participants who were divided into two groups. For 16 weeks, one group consumed the equivalent of 1.5 cups of grape powder daily, while the other group received a placebo powder. The researchers then measured the participants’ macular pigment optical density, a marker for macular degeneration, every four weeks.

The grape-eating group showed a significant improvement in macular pigment optical density, indicating better eye health. On the other hand, the control group experienced an increase in advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which can lead to age-related diseases.

But how do grapes fight oxidative stress? They are packed with antioxidants such as phenolic compounds, vitamins, and carotenoids like lutein and β-carotene. These superheroes of the fruit world protect our eyes from damage caused by free radicals.

Dr. Jung Eun Kim, one of the study’s authors, explains: “These overall antioxidants may explain eye-protective effects against oxidative stress with grapes.”
