Millions of people suffering from sleep apnea rely on a motorized device called a CPAP machine to get a good night’s sleep. Now, two new studies have confirmed that CPAP treatment not only improves the quality of sleep but also has significant benefits for the overall health of the heart.
“The results are striking,” states Dr. Jordi de Batlle, co-author of one of the studies.
During the study period, patients who adhered to CPAP treatment reduced their risk of death from heart disease by a remarkable 36%. Additionally, they had a 40% lower risk of death from any cause, as found in the study.
Previous research in this area has yielded mixed results, but de Batlle and his team discovered that CPAP treatment could help many patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) prevent heart disease and stroke. Furthermore, CPAP treatment has already been proven to reduce sleepiness and improve overall quality of life.
To investigate further, the researchers tracked down over 3,600 OSA patients in Catalonia who had discontinued their CPAP treatment in 2011. These patients were compared to an equal number of patients who continued using CPAP until at least 2015 or until death.

Apart from lower odds of death, those who persisted with CPAP treatment experienced an 18% reduced risk of hospitalization due to heart disease.
Dr. Janet Wei, a cardiologist at the Smidt Heart Institute in Los Angeles, commended the researchers for studying the link between obstructive sleep apnea and cardiovascular disease. She explains that evidence indicates sleep apnea is a risk factor for various cardiovascular conditions.
However, Wei also cautions that the study was observational and retrospective, and thus cannot provide conclusive evidence. Yet, it does provide thought-provoking insights and serves as a reminder for patients to remain consistent with their CPAP treatment.

Sleep apnea occurs when the muscles in the throat relax during sleep, causing the airway to narrow or completely close off. Dr. de Batlle highlights that weight loss is usually the first recommendation for overweight or obese sleep apnea patients. However, when weight loss alone fails to improve the condition, CPAP becomes the gold standard treatment.
The findings from these two studies will be presented at the European Respiratory Society Congress in Milan, Italy, this week.
In another study, the effects of CPAP treatment and the weight loss medication liraglutide on coronary artery plaque volume were compared. Researchers discovered that CPAP may reduce coronary artery plaque volume in sleep apnea patients, while the weight loss medication did not have the same impact.
However, this study was small and involved just 30 patients who received either one or both treatments for 24 weeks. Dr. Cliona O’Donnell, a researcher involved in the study, suggests that further evaluation in larger studies is necessary to draw firm conclusions.
Dr. Wei, while inspired by the second study, also points out its limited sample size.
Regarding why some individuals discontinue their CPAP treatment, Dr. Wei explains that some patients find it difficult to tolerate the machine or are too unwell to use it.
However, she suggests exploring alternative CPAP apparatus, such as a nasal CPAP, as a viable option.
It is important to note that findings presented at medical conferences should be considered preliminary until they are published in peer-reviewed journals.
