Flesh-Eating Bacterial Infections: A Grave Concern
Public health officials have sounded the alarm on the dangers of flesh-eating bacterial infections, following the unfortunate deaths of three older adults on the northeast coast. These tragic cases serve as a wakeup call, reminding us to be aware of the risks and take necessary precautions.
Among the deaths, two were caused by vibriosis, an illness triggered by the vibrio vulnificus bacteria. News outlets reported that two of the infections were connected to wound infections in Connecticut residents. Meanwhile, the source of the infection in the third death, which occurred in New York on eastern Long Island, is still under investigation by Governor Kathy Hochul’s office. It is worth noting that all three victims were between the ages of 60 and 80.
Vibrio vulnificus bacteria can be found in seawater as well as in raw or undercooked seafood, particularly oysters. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), vibriosis claims approximately 100 lives each year in the United States, and the bacteria causes around 80,000 illnesses. Of these illnesses, approximately 52,000 result from consuming contaminated food. Shockingly, these infections have been on the rise in the eastern United States since the late 1990s, a trend that may persist due to climate change and the subsequent warming of our waters, as reported by various news sources.
Mild cases of vibriosis typically last around three days, with symptoms including diarrhea, stomach cramps, vomiting, fever, chills, and ear infections. However, in more severe situations, intensive care or limb amputation may be required. Alarmingly, around one in every five patients with serious infections succumbs to the illness, sometimes with alarming speed.
Certain factors increase the risk of vibriosis infections or complications. Individuals with liver disease, cancer, a weakened immune system, or those taking medication that reduces stomach acid levels are particularly susceptible, as noted by Governor Hochul’s office. For instance, the Connecticut Department of Public Health reported three cases since July 1, with one infection occurring in a resident who consumed raw oysters not harvested from Long Island Sound at an out-of-state establishment.

Connecticut, known for its thriving oyster industry, has managed to avoid the presence of vibrio vulnificus bacteria in its waters. This bacterium tends to thrive in warmer waters. However, over the past decade, the state has implemented various safeguards to cool oysters and eliminate bacteria, according to NBC News and the Associated Press.
Governor Hochul has issued a heartfelt plea to New Yorkers, urging them to remain vigilant and adopt responsible precautions to ensure their safety and that of their loved ones. To prevent infection, it is crucial to cover wounds, as well as recently pierced areas and tattoos, when in warm seawater. If you have a weakened immune system, it is advisable to refrain from consuming oysters and other raw shellfish. Additionally, remember to wear gloves when handling raw shellfish and wash your hands thoroughly afterward.
If any wounds come into contact with saltwater, raw seafood, or its juices, state health officials in Connecticut recommend washing the affected area with soap and water. It is essential to be proactive in safeguarding ourselves and our health, as the consequences of these infections can be grave.
It is worth noting that this issue extends beyond the northeast coast. In June, a man from Missouri tragically lost his life after consuming raw oysters contaminated with vibrio vulnificus.
These unfortunate incidents underscore the need for greater education and awareness regarding vibriosis and the potential dangers it poses. By staying informed and taking necessary precautions, we can minimize the risks and protect ourselves from the potentially devastating consequences of these infections.
